Important Changes at Edinburgh's Waverley Station

3 February 2014

Dear Customer,

Due to issues of security and the installation of a new gate system it was recently  proposed that there would be severely restricted traffic access to Waverley Station or perhaps even a complete ban; including taxis. Network Rail has now implemented the new system at the station which will change the way all taxis operate at Waverley.

Approximately 200 taxis were issued with security permits to pass the station barriers. Some of these drivers are members of Central Taxis, Comcabs or City Cabs. At peak times, when these taxis departed the rank with passengers on board (or were engaged elsewhere), all other taxis disengaging in the station were free to supplement their service by collecting passengers from the rank if there was a queue. Given the new security arrangements that is no longer the case.

Over the past two weeks this has caused tremendous congestion in the vicinity of the station, particularly on Waverley Bridge. City of Edinburgh Council has expressed concern and in an attempt to reduce external congestion; Network Rail has now announced that it will reduce the number of taxis with permits by approximately half.

Some of the few remaining taxis with access are members of Central Taxis, but in common with our competitors will no longer be able to guarantee a service to or from the interior of the station going forward.

Unless a fundamental change of policy can be agreed between Network Rail and CEC, it is  predicted that access to the station for taxis will cease altogether in the coming weeks and months. There are plans to apply new taxi ranks and drop off areas, surrounding the station and extending existing provisions. For the convenience of Central Taxis passengers we will arrange pick-up or drop-off at any entrance.

 - Our default meeting point will be on East Market Street to the east of the pedestrian exit (turn left as you exit) as this is the quietest and safest of the options and benefits from a level of shelter from the elements, in the form of the underside of North Bridge.

 - Passengers requiring assistance are advised to book their pick up or drop off at the Calton Road entrance. All entrances provide step-free access whilst at Calton Road there is additional drop off space and easy lift access.

 - Please feel free to ask when making your booking and our telephonists will be happy to advise the best option for you.

This may not feel like an ideal or convenient solution to those of our customers who have enjoyed being dropped off or collected within the station until now. Whether the reasons for these changes are based on security considerations, congestion and emissions, or on commercial considerations; the Edinburgh Taxi Trade and our passengers will work from the pedestrian exits and continue to work with the City of Edinburgh Council to ensure that this operates as safely and conveniently as possible.
